Legal AI is entering a new era. Tools that could support research can now reason across full case records, summarize thousands of pages and produce first drafts of routine documents. That’s arriving just as government legal offices face rising caseloads, flat staffing and more complex legal issues. So the question is no longer whether AI belongs in government legal work, but how to use it well.

In its recent surveys of more than 1,600 state and local employees, FedInsider found that almost seven in ten respondents said AI could make the biggest difference by simplifying everyday work, reducing repetitive tasks and making information easier to use. But just inserting AI tools or giving their employees access to tools isn’t enough, feedback from recent webinars show agency legal teams want more training, practical examples, and guidance on using AI to reduce administrative work, manage cases more efficiently and give attorneys more time to focus on legal work.
