Jumpstarting AI Using Infrastructure-as-a-Service (S1E7)

Everybody seems to be talking about artificial intelligence and its ability to handle unsolvable problems. The federal government is ground zero when it comes to massive amounts of data and an insatiable need to solve complex problems. This ranges from giving healthcare to veterans to locating space debris.

The practical question is, how can this be done in an environment that has been focused on putting information into silos and limiting access. Today’s discussion asks three federal leaders to air out some solutions to this vexing issue.

Colonel Sang Han has the rare combination of academic training with practical, boots-on-the-ground experience. He opens the discussion by suggesting that developers need access to a common infrastructure to get data spread out across silos. His second suggestion is federal developers need tools and models and code that can be reused so they do not have to re-invent the wheel for each new application.

Anthony Robbins observes that the infrastructure of tomorrow will be in the cloud, on premises and possibly at the edge. He suggests that the edge may develop increased importance because of the need to train the neural networks to leverage artificial intelligence.

Kelli Furrer introduces a new phrase to describe that Dell Technologies thinks of themselves as being bridge builders between the machines who train machine learning and the humans who are part of the analytical matrix. She brings a lot of insight to the statement, “the cloud is not a destination, it is an operating model.”

The interview seems to generate excitement when the topic of public private partnerships is introduced. Col. Sang Han was encouraged to mention the one year he spent at Carnegie Mellon focusing on strategies for stopping cyber threats. Additionally, much progress has been made with the fact that they have an engagement officer near Silicon Valley.

The bottom line is the value placed on the human component. All participants agreed that it will always be people on top, but it is important to have a modern infrastructure underneath.
