In today’s interview, moderator Francis Rose sits down with two panels of experts on the issue of airport security. Each person brings a unique perspective to the discussion. We have participants from trade associations, federal agencies, and technology partners.
The discussion starts with the opportunity that the reduction in flights gives for airports gives people responsible for safe flights. Lauren Beyer from Airlines for America cites the fact that last year U.S. airlines transported two and a half passengers per day while today’s traffic is down 75%.
Mario Wilson from the TSA talks about working with 430 airports and installing 15,000 pieces of equipment to prevent the spread of COVID during this reduction in flights.
When it comes to cleaning, Mario Wilson mentions the TSA has come out with its guidelines for cleaning their checkpoints and associated bins. This is being implemented today and will serve as a basis for future preventative measures.
In the interviews, there is a general focus on non-contact with TSA in a way to assure a safe flight. Jim Moos from Leidos talks about screening being fast, frictionless, and fully integrated.
False alarms are even addressed. The goal is fewer pat-downs and increased efficiency at the checkpoint. One of the long-term goals is to establish a contactless screening process. From there, the participants speculate about the future of screening.
One speaker talked about “screen at speed” where a person would walk through a screening machine.
