May people will resist change and transformation. An argument can be made that humans will operate under the status quo until there is an event that makes them change. Well, the COVID crisis seems like the event that is pushing federal information professionals to move in the director of more flexible network solutions.

This interview showcases the experience Allen Hill has had at the GSA. He starts by talking about the Enterprise Infrastructure Solutions. Essentially, it takes 90+ contracting vehicles and combines it into one. This has been an important guideline when several agencies noticed a surge in traffic during the current health care crisis.

David Young observes that when HHS, CDC, and NIH encounter a surge in citizens seeking information about the novel coronavirus, they had to adapt their network to handle the increased flow. The challenge is to be able to apply a new approach to solving the problem.

Allen Hill describes a situation where an agency must be able to look three to five years down the road when making changes. Allen talks about a system having an elastic capability. He reminds fellow network leaders to differentiate between enterprise services and business applications when making changes as well.

David Young makes one of the most intriguing statements during the interview. He maintains that “network” is no longer a noun, it is a verb. In a new world that must constantly adapt to new conditions, federal networks must adapt as well.
