Transforming Technology for Dynamic Work (S1E14)

We saw a dramatic shift in 2020 from office to home. Here is a discussion that gives some of the details on how that transformation happened in the federal government. We have two federal leaders and two commercial technical subject matter experts to talk details about how the shift was made to a dynamic workforce.

Sam Musa, the CIO at the Government Publishing Office, gives us insight on how he transitioned from hard tokens to soft tokens for flexible remote access. Many have categorized smartphones as an extremely niche product, when Sam introduced the concept for remote workers, it had a drastic impact on productivity.

NASA Goddard is much more geographically diverse than the GPO. Emma Antunes informs us that she must understand the remote working needs of over 10,000 people across six locations. Remarkably, she noted that before COVID meetings normally did not have full participation at the appointed hour. Now, the meetings start within the minute. By using technology from Microsoft, she tells the audience that they have a handle on telework.

When it comes to size, very few companies are as large as Booz Allen with over 27,000 people. Munjeet Singh talks about a systematic process where they test new technologies for collaboration as well and distributing existing systems to remote team members.

The discussion is summed up by taking a term popularized in the world of cloud computing, “dynamic,” and applying it to the new remote work environment. Chris Aherne from Smartsheet uses the word “dynamic” to contrast with the traditional methods of linear work systems that are sliced and rigid.
