The Cybersecurity Effect How to Mitigate Risk, Safeguard Your Network, & Plan for a Future of Constant Change (E62)

So many federal information technology professionals have been hit by cyberattacks that they know it is a never-ending battle.  The real question is – what is the most effective way to implement a digital transformation to react to this constant attack?

Today’s discussion brings together two people who have been responsible for managing highly visible networks, a cybersecurity expert from the FBI, and an expert from a technical partner that can bring an overview to the discussion.

Clarice Kent from the U.S. Marine Forces Cyberspace Command begins the discussion with a valid point – you can’t take advantage of leading-edge technology with legacy infrastructure.  Rather than a full swoop approach, the Marines are approaching the network upgrade systematically.

After she observes existing technology, she extends her remarks to the security stack.

Of course, the Cloud Service Providers (CSP) can provide security but, for the Marines, they always go above and beyond. She prefers to layer their security stacks and access policies over the CSP.

Years ago, a federal agency may have had a single data center in one building; it is obvious today that cloud technology has destroyed that concept.  There is a direct parallel with seeking assistance with today’s multivariate attack situation; your servers are not alone, and neither are you.

Cynthia Kaiser from the FBI brings this point clearly when she stated the FBI’s cyber strategy is a shared responsibility with partnerships coming to focus.  She reinforces this message with the statement that no one organization or agency can counter the cyberthreats of today alone.

She gives specifics on what to do if your system is attacked, and she also offers ways to get support for this coordinated effort.

This “power of community” is echoed by remarks by Jeffrey Aguilar, Chief Information Security Officer, County of Los Angeles.  In his role he has seen that when collaboration is accomplished across groups, major cybersecurity hurdles can be overcome.
