Alma Cole from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection talks about 1,700 employees, 116 major systems operating in 52 countries. Frank Konieczny from the Air Force takes it up a notch with 200 locations, and much data, literally, in the air. Christopher Cleary, from the Navy, gives his opinion on protecting data on the ocean, in the air, and underwater. Each brings a perspective to the table that will surprise you.
An Air Force asset can produce an enormous amount of data. When it comes to safeguarding data on the edge, Frank Konieczny facetiously remarks, “Is it a computer wrapped in an airplane?” or an airplane with a computer?
Rebecca Fitzhugh from Rubrik has experience in the Marine Corps and brings the discussion to the real world. She brings up the case of attacking data backups. Malicious actors not only want to destroy military assets, but they want to deprive their opponents of recovery.
Chris Cleary sums up the problem succinctly. He talks about getting to the edge and doing as much as one can. Today’s weapons are too fast to have a data dance of back and forth to a large system to decide. The speed of the decision has been brought down to seconds.
