Rethink Technology for Secure Comms & Data for the Tactical Edge (E56)

At one time the “tactical edge” was a man on horseback. Today’s tactical edge encompasses sensors, satellites, flexible communication, and much more. To orchestrate this new capacity, military leaders are adopting capabilities to make that valuable data resilient, secure, and timely.

During the interview Colonel Khatod, United States Army Cyber Command, gave some details, “I look at the entire Army, we have 1.4 million end points on five continents.”  Those end points can produce a staggering amount of data that needs to be analyzed and acted upon.

The traditional approach of a data center hosting all these endpoints is no longer efficient. During the interview, the military leaders discuss the ability to have options to process data from the edge to the cloud.

Carl Couch has years of experience with communications in a warfighting zone, including data collection in the field. He gives his opinions on improving accessibility, automation, and flexibility of this entire process. The concept is to have multiple options in the field. If something like radio communications fails, the warfighter can hop to satellite or other options. Redundancy provides resilience in the fog of war.

Colonel Joesph Pishock likes the idea of a hybrid cloud that can provide services to remote end points. Not only can the hybrid cloud provide redundancy, but advances seen in today’s devices can have redundancy built in.
