Senior Research Scientist

Mr. Robert M. Kimball is the Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Cyber, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (C5ISR) Center’s senior research scientist for cyber security. As a senior research scientist, Mr. Kimball investigates innovative capabilities to improve the cyber posture of the Army’s tactical communications networks.

Mr. Kimball previously served as a highly qualified expert technical advisor to the Defense Information Systems Agency’s (DISA) Cyber Development Directorate where he led the orchestration and automation efforts, including security orchestration and automated response systems. He worked on end-point protection strategies, cyber automation, artificial intelligence/ machine learning systems for both disconnected end-point protection and data analytics; zero trust, joint regional security stacks and Department of Defense Cybersecurity Analysis and Review.

Mr. Kimball began his career at AT&T Bell Laboratories researching transmission physics of ultra-long haul optical fiber systems. In addition, he served as the Chief Technology Officer for Ciena Government Solutions where he led research teams studying software defined networks, low environmental impact networks and overbuilds of existing networks with high speed optics. He also worked at MITRE as an optical communications engineer supporting DISA, and was the lead optical engineer when DISA acquired the Defense Information Systems optical network.

Mr. Kimball has a master’s degree in electrical engineering from Villanova University. He has several patents, and has published numerous peer reviewed papers.
