5G networks first made their appearance in 2019, when major telecommunications carriers started rolling them out. Today, more than half the U.S. has 5G coverage, mostly in more densely populated areas. By 2030 it is estimated that more than 90% of mobile data coverage will be 5G.
And it has been as significant a change as promised, with download speeds up to 20 Gbps, resulting in very low latency (signal delay) — one reason that streaming services have grown so rapidly in popularity.

Advances in network slicing technology make it possible for service providers to create multiple customized virtual networks within a shared infrastructure environment. By harnessing the power of artificial intelligence to manage and automate Radio Access Network (RAN) components in cellular networks, the networks can be streamlined and optimized for functionality, security, and performance. Other applications of AI to 5G/NextG planning and operations, as well as the impact of AI-related traffic and edge computing, will also be explored.

AI’s rapid adoption is transforming both the design and use of communication networks. Robust telecom infrastructure — such as private 5G, SD-WAN, and edge computing — is critical for transporting and processing the massive data flows underpinning AI workloads across industries. At the same time, artificial intelligence is evolving communications themselves, powering network automation, predictive analytics, and intelligent monitoring for greater resilience, efficiency, and security. This discussion will examine how communication networks support AI deployment at scale, and how AI optimizes network operations and enables use cases like mission-critical communications, safety, and real-time analytics at the edge. Challenges and strategies for advancing this symbiosis will also be addressed.
3:00pm – 3:55pm: The Future of 6G
Just as 5G set a new standard for speed and reliability, 6G – the sixth generation of cellular technology — is envisioned to provide ultra-high speeds, near-zero latency, and a massive increase in capacity (the number of devices and connections that can be supported by at the same time). To accomplish this, 6G will optimize network performance, adapt to changing conditions and demands for service, and manage resources.
The introduction of 6G presents the opportunity to advance numerous new applications, such as immersive experiences (e.g., augmented/virtual reality and holographic communications), support for autonomous systems, and expanding the Internet of Things (IoT).
